Picture the scene; you’ve been enjoying a peaceful nights’ sleep, only to be stirred by a sudden noise emanating from your boiler.
So, not only do you have to contend with being woken up in the middle of the night, but there’s also the worry that your boiler has a significant fault that could cost huge amounts to repair.
Ultimately, you’ll need to hire an accredited engineer to identify the cause of this noise, but in the meantime, here are a few sounds and potential triggers to keep in mind:
1. Clunking and Banging Noises
These loud and often recurring sounds are known colloquially as ‘kettling’ noises, which are typically caused when limescale accumulates on the heat exchanger.
This accumulation of limescale and sludge can block the flow of water throughout the heating system, whilst also preventing it from reaching the optimal temperature.
Over time, this issue can cause the pressure in your boiler to rise incrementally, and whilst modern boilers have innovative safety devices such as relief valves, it’s something that needs to be dealt with urgently if you’re to optimise the efficiency of your unit.
2. Whistling Noises
Next up are whistling noises, which are relatively commonplace and often caused by trapped air within the heating system.
In most instances, this is a relatively minor fault that can be easily repaired, and we’d recommend bleeding your radiators to release trapped air through the valve to provide some relief.
However, if the noise persists, you should call in a Gas Safe-registered engineer to inspect the boiler and investigate the potential trigger in greater detail. If the issue is being caused by a loss of water pressure or a blockage, they’ll also correct this whilst on-site.
3. Gurgling Noises
Gurgling sounds may also be caused by air in the heating system, or a blockage at the bottom of the boiler unit.
It can even be triggered by a frozen condensate pipe, which will need to be thawed by a qualified heating engineer.
Regardless, this is an issue that can worsen considerably over time, so it’s important that you have the cause investigated at your earliest convenience.
